Chinese in Zambia: getting rich and boosting tourism at Victoria Falls
In November 2014, I went to Zambia and Zimbabwe to visit a new wave of Chinese hotels opening around the stunning Victoria Falls. The Chinese in Zambia have long stood accused of profiteering from the copper-rich nation. Now, it seems, Chinese entrepreneurs are diversifying their wealth and investing in tourism, building hotels that are attracting Chinese tourists. What’s more, cheap Chinese engineering expertise has seen Livingstone undergo a make-over, with a new airport, as well as roads, drainage and lighting, all meaning that the Victoria Falls is finally able to handle a high volume of tourists.
